Chapter Fourteen

Jace is gone when I wake up. I stretch, half-expecting to knock into him, but the side of the bed that he laid on is empty. The only sign of him is the upright pillow and the creases in the duvet.

Once I’m showered, I go downstairs. I definitely have class today, although I’m not sure having a bounty on my head changes things. It should, right? But I’ve spent the last two days cooped up here, and I might go crazy if I stay longer.

Besides, when has hiding worked for anyone?

I march into the kitchen, bookbag slung over my shoulder. I don’t know who I’m going to find, but I don’t expect all of them.

Together.

It’s the first time since the night they pulled me out of Kronos’ office. I’m not prepared for how overwhelming the three of them are in the same room.

Wolfe is the first to raise his head and grin at me. He sits at the breakfast bar beside Apollo, a bowl of cereal in front of him. Apollo has what looks like an egg sandwich. And Jace stands near the coffee pot, stirring cream into his mug.

It’s normal.

And weird.

After the last few days of irregular schedules, and the guys passing each other like… like ships in the night, seeing them all together is an eye-opener. I’m living in this house with all of them. I’m getting to know them, but that doesn’t mean I’m not a captive.

I have to test that theory. “Will one of you take me to campus?”

Jace’s back snaps straighter, but he doesn’t turn around. “You think that’s a good idea?”

“What’s the point of all of this if I don’t go?” I counter. It’s too early for arguing, though—I need a big dose of caffeine before I can verbally spar with Jace.

I find a mug and step up beside him. He slides me the creamer, watching me out of the corner of his eye. I ignore him until my coffee is the right color, then raise it to my mouth.

Perfection.

Almost too hot, but bearable. And the rush of heat in my belly can be blamed on the coffee, not the three gorgeous men sharing the kitchen with me.

I turn to Jace and lean my hip on the counter. “Okay, go ahead and tell me how terrible an idea it is to go to class, when this whole thing happened because I wanted to go to class and you took that away from me?”

His lips press together.

I nod once. “Exactly.” Feeling extra bold, I step around him and let my gaze bounce between Apollo and Wolfe. My heart gives a weird sort of lurch. I shouldn’t feel attracted to both of them, right?

“I’ll take you.” Apollo leans back in his chair, reaching over and dragging out the third one. “Hungry?”

I beam. “Thank you, Apollo.”

Jace scoffs. “This is dangerous.”

“They won’t expect me on campus.”

He snorts and yanks the fridge open. “Sure they fucking won’t.” He wheels back around and points at Apollo. “You’re her shadow. Okay?”

“Yes, sir.
